Unfortunately, no. South Dakota does not currently have any state sponsored incentives. Individual utilities may offer their own Net Metering incentives but are not required to do so. Check with your utility to see what they can do for you if you are considering a solar installation at your home.
Yes. The federal tax credit is currently at 30% of the total cost of your solar installation. This incentive runs through 2034 before it declines in future years. Consult with your accountant to see how this can be to your benefit.
Ownership is the better option by far. You are in control of your system from day one and are the sole beneficiary of all tax incentives offered through ownership. Leasing is a very affordable path to getting solar on your home but enters you into a long term contract with the leasing company and can be tricky to transfer to another person if you sell your home.
The federal government offers REAP grants that can offset the cost of solar on your farm or other rural business by 25%. These grants are not guaranteed and must be applied for early in the year to have the best chance for success.
